Some on Fury Lane furious over new streetlights, others welcome safety measure

"It's like the intersection made a way to intrude on our backyard,” one homeowner who lives near the intersection of Fury Lane and Calle Verde shared.

LA MESA, Calif. — Some neighbors are living up to the name of Fury Lane about streetlights that were installed at an intersection in unincorporated La Mesa.

CBS 8 is Working for You and talked to neighbors along with a spokesperson from County of San Diego about this intersection and what's done to keep people safe. Some neighbors say they welcome the change, and the lights make this intersection safer. Other neighbors say the lights just don't fit the neighborhood.

"It's like the intersection made a way to intrude on our backyard,” one homeowner who lives near the intersection of Fury Lane and Calle Verde shared.

She says this streetlight set up has got to go.

"Right now, they don't even have the lights on, but the streetlights are lit and the white lights are lit and it looks like daylight at nighttime," she said.

Bob Barrett also lives near the intersection.

"With this view and this backyard, the house has a certain value," Barrett said. "What they've done now is diminish that value along with the quality of life."

Barrett says the old intersection may have had its issues in the past but it wasn’t a problem anymore. He says the new intersection is just unnecessary.

"If you're going to put something in a residential neighborhood, put something that fits in with the neighborhood," he said. "They put four more streetlights with cameras that I'm concerned about because they could be encroaching in my backyard when my kids play."

Donna Durckel with San Diego County's Land Use and Environment Group says the traffic signal is still under construction. They've installed new streetlights and will remove the old ones. That means fewer poles in the air.

Durckel also says the street signals themselves will have blinds on them that make them visible to oncoming traffic only. That means they will not be visible in anyone's yards or homes.

She also said the signal was approved by the County Board of Supervisors back in 2021 to make the intersection safer.

The intersection shares the block with Avocado Elementary School and a private preschool. Some neighbors say something must give.

"This monstrosity they put here, I'm not sure is necessary for such a small, two lane road with a T intersection. I don't know why you would need something so massive."

People thanked construction workers at the Fury Lane and Calle Verde intersection for making it safer while CBS 8 was in the neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.

Another neighbor heard CBS 8 didn't want to speak on camera but called CBS 8 directly saying they love the streetlights and want their voices heard too.

The County says construction on the streetlights is tentatively scheduled to be finished on March 13.
