Homeowners' exemption
The homeowners’ exemption is a reduction in taxes for declaring that your property is your home.
How much does it save you?
According to San Diego County Assessor Jordan Marks, the exemption saves you about $70 off of your annual property tax bill.
The exemption was established in 1974, and Marks said the exemption hasn't increased along with the prices of homes. Jordan is looking into an initiative to increase the homeowners' exemption amount.
"Expanding the homeowners' exemption to match the cost of living today to give homeowners that intended affordability opportunity," Marks said.
The initiative would require a voter-approved constitutional amendment.
How do I know if I claim the exemption?
Visit the county accessor's website or call (619) 531-5772.
Here's how to check your bill to see if you're enrolled.
How many people claim this exemption?
According to the county, only about 50% of San Diego County homeowners claim the homeowners' exemption.
Do I have to renew annually?
No, once you're in the program, it renews every year.
