San Diego Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade | 2024

The parade was preceded by a 5K Walk/Fun Run and followed by the Harmony Health Festival Sunday, January 14, 2024.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego’s Martin Luther King Jr. Parade is one of the largest celebrations of its kind in the United States in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The parade will be preceded by a 5K Walk/Fun Run and followed by the Harmony Health Festival.

The MLK Parade is coordinated by the Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., which is the oldest African American fraternity in America. The theme for this year's parade is "A Healthy Community Thrives Together!"

CBS 8’s Keristen Holmes will be emceeing the parade, which will be held Sunday, January 14, 2024.

5K Walk/Fun Run

The 42nd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. 5K Walk/Fun Run kicks off January 14 at 9:30 a.m. along Harbor Drive in Downtown San Diego. Participants can walk, jog or run along with others celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. King.

Inspired by a desire to help the community move forward toward a healthier way of life, this 5K Walk/Fun Run builds off Dr King's dream to improve equal participation in education, healthcare and the workforce. 

5K Run/Walk Route:

  • Begin staging 5K at Grape and Harbor Dr. - Ash Street
  • 5K heads southbound on Harbor Drive
  • Turn left onto W. Broadway
  • Turn right on Pacific Hwy
  • Cross Harbor Dr. at "Dead Mans Point"
  • Use sidewalks next to and behind Ruocco Park and Embarcadero along the waterfront to South
  • Take Embarcadero and head back to Ruocco Park for the finish

San Diego MLK Parade 

One of the largest celebrations of its kind in the United States in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the annual San Diego Martin Luther King Jr. Parade is in its 42nd year. Join in the celebration, which is along Harbor Drive, on January 14 at 10:00 am. This event features floats, high school bands, drill teams, colleges, universities, fraternities, sororities and churches.

The parade route begins South along N. Harbor Drive, starting at W. Ash St., and then turns East on W. Broadway for a block before turning South on Pacific Hwy to finish near W. G St.

Harmony Health Festival

The Harmony Health Festival is an event that embodies harmony, health and wellness while celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The focus of the event is the importance of mental as well as physical well-being within the community while honoring the principles championed by Dr. King during the Civil Rights era. The festival starts at 9:30 a.m. and runs until 2:00 p.m. It will held at Ruocco Park, which is at the corner of Harbor Lane and Pacific Highway.
