Spring Valley residents say roads are a mess, in need of repair

"I'm at my wits end now about this whole mess. I mean, it's like they don't care about us out here in Spring Valley," said James Firminger.

SAN DIEGO — People living in one Spring Valley neighborhood said their roads are a mess and they want the county to fix them.

“They're in pretty bad shape,” says James Firminger.

Firminger lives near Ivanho and Omega Streets, where he and his neighbors told CBS 8 they've had to deal with cracks, potholes, and uneven pavement for years.

"I'm at my wit's end now about this whole mess. I mean, it's like they don't care about us out here in Spring Valley," said Firminger.

Firminger says cars often have to swerve to avoid certain holes, adding some have been damaged when they can't.

In the 36 years he's been living in Spring Valley, he says the roads haven't been repaved. Potholes have been filled in, but it's never a permanent fix.

"As soon as we have rainfall or a lot of traffic, they just come apart. You've got the same identical hole, usually they start to grow," said Firminger.

Firminger reached out to CBS 8 asking for help, saying he's tried for at least a year to get the attention of the county, but has gotten nowhere, even after making calls and sending emails with pictures attached.

We asked him if he's feeling ignored.

“Yes. Very much so,” responded Firminger.

One possible issue, Spring Valley falls under District 4, which has had an open Supervisor seat since Nathan Fletcher resigned back in May.

CBS 8 reached out to the spokesperson who handles road issues throughout the county.

They said there’s been no official complaint made regarding the roads, adding:

Ivanho and Omega Streets are County-maintained roads. They are part of the 2,000 miles of roads under our care. Both streets were last sealed in 2002. Since then, road crews have performed periodic inspections and maintenance, including pothole repair, tree trimming, street sweeping and litter removal.

Since 2018, the County has been incrementally resurfacing the roads in the surrounding community. This neighborhood, including Galopago, Saint George, Arapaho, Huron, as well as Ivanho and Omega Streets, are scheduled to be resurfaced in the summer of 2025. In the meantime, our road crews continue to monitor these roads to ensure their continued safe operation.

If members of the public would like to report any maintenance concerns for County-maintained roads, the County’s Tell Us Now! App is a convenient tool for submitting service requests and is available online for smartphone users at: https://www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/dpw/roads/svcreq.html

People may also reach us on the Public Works website via the Road Service Request link to report road-related issues such as potholes, cracks, damaged or missing signs, trash, graffiti and more or call (877) 684-8000.

As for Firminger, he's hopeful for a quicker fix. Either way, he just wants something done.

“I just want this road fixed like everybody else would want,” said Firminger.
