SAN DIEGO — A dangerous four-way stop intersection in South Bay was supposed to be turned into a roundabout, but the project still hasn't been completed.
After a CBS 8 report in March, the City of San Diego told us that the roundabout could be done by June. But nothing’s happened.
Chuck Chorn has lived on the corner of Del Sol and Koster in Otay Mesa for 40 years. He’s seen numerous bad accidents and hears drag racing late at night.
“It's been a beautiful place to live, other than the traffic. Late at night I'll be laying in bed with the window open and I can hear the traffic. And you can hear them coming and hear them going right through the intersection without stopping. They must be doing at least 60. It's just amazing nobody's been killed," Chorn said.
Chorn says drivers fly up a stretch of Del Sol Boulevard before they get to the next stop sign, more than a quarter mile away.
He was thrilled when CBS 8 reported that the Otay-Mesa Nestor Community Planning Group gave the green light to replace the busy intersection with a roundabout.
The green light was given in March. But today, nothing’s changed.
“Something needs to be done before somebody gets killed but so far, it hasn't happened. Here we are in July and nothing's been done," Chorn said.
When CBS 8 first reported this story in March, the city told us money was already earmarked in the city budget for the project. Officials said the roundabout could be installed quickly using military-grade materials and that it could be done by June.
CBS 8 reached out to the city to find out what was happening. A city spokesperson responded saying,
"The timeline has extended a bit. Since the last project update, the City has been coordinating with MTS and purchasing the materials needed for construction. We expect that project construction will start in September this year (2024)."
For now, Chorn and his neighbors will keep waiting and hoping no more bad accidents happen before the City can be the roundabout installed.
“That'd probably be the best thing that's happened to this neighborhood," Chorn said.
