Christmas tree shopping | What to know before you buy

As the holiday season approaches, Christmas tree shoppers may notice fewer options this year. Here's what you need to know about tree types, prices and care.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — As holiday shoppers flock to Christmas tree lots, they'll find fewer options this year, with Douglas Firs and Noble Firs dominating the market.

Juan Casas, manager at Carmona's Tree Lot at 765 Palomar Street in Chula Vista said tree suppliers have significantly reduced their inventory this season.

Tree Types: Douglas Fir vs. Noble Fir

Douglas Fir

  • Budget-friendly option
  • Most common tree
  • Prices steady from last year
  • Drawback: Branches less suitable for heavy ornaments

Noble Fir

  • Sturdier branches
  • Nicknamed the "Cadillac of Christmas Trees"
  • More expensive
  • Highly fragrant
  • Better for ornament enthusiasts

Price Comparison

  • Douglas firs: $42 to $69
  • Noble firs: $67 to $119
  • Prices increase with tree height

Pro Tips for Choosing and Maintaining Your Christmas Tree

  • Ignore myths about sugar water or aspirin
  • Focus on water intake
