SAN DIEGO — For close to 20 years, the only Original Tommy's San Diego location sat on the corner of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Ruffner Street.
It was a popular spot known for its chili burgers. Now, nearly eight months after it closed, it's deserted and has vandalism everywhere.
"We'd go there sometimes during the week at work. A bunch of us at Ford would go and have some burgers. It's sad to see how it is now," said one former customer.
The company announced the closure on its Facebook page March 14, the post said in part:
"We understand that the news of our closing in San Diego may come as a disappointment, but we want you to know that our commitment to providing you with our world-famous chili burgers and other delicious menu items remains unchanged. Our 32 other locations in California and Nevada are ready to welcome you with open arms, and we hope to see you soon."
The post generated hundreds of comments from sad customers, but there was no mention as to why they closed, or what would replace it.
Here's what CBS 8 found out.
- Tommy's does not own the property. According to the San Diego County Recorder, its owner is listed as a living trust based in Los Angeles.
- While CBS 8 was not able to reach the owner, we did make contact with a construction company associated with the property.
- We were told the building will be painted next week, but the status of its use is still ongoing.
