SAN DIEGO — Are you ready for a blast of motivation? More than 1,500 athletes are currently competing in the San Diego Senior Games.
Athletes ages 50 to 102 have competed in the San Diego Senior Games for the past 37 years. Kirsten Cummings, a former professional basketball player, is the executive director of the Olympic-style competition. She shared her message to other seniors reading this article: "Get off the couch, and get on the court."
She didn't have to tell 91-year old Staff Walker twice.
In Scripps Ranch at Fitness Quest 10, we watched the 20-year Marine Corps veteran throw his weight around in the bench press competition. After pumping out a set of 20 lifts, we asked Staff how he felt.
"Great," he said with a huge smile.
His wife, Sandra, is an 84-year old jump rope champion.
"In all honesty, I am doing this because Jeff pressured me," Sandra said. "He chased me down and told me I was a good example of an elderly lady who could encourage other people."
Gym hosts 'Fitness Events'
"Staying active and connected to a community is one of the most important things that we all need," said Jeff Bristol, the owner of Fitness Quest 10.
There are 21 Senior Game sporting events. Jeff's gym hosts the "Fitness Events," where seniors can see how far they can heave a medicine ball, perform the broad jump. straight arm hang, 300 yard shuttle run, row, kettlebell box squat and more.
77-year old Stan Williams is one of the senior games greats. He has won 42 medals. His 74-year old wife, Trish, has taken home an even dozen.
"It feels great, I've got them hanging up in my office," said Trish.
The senior games also bring out the best in Rita and Jeff Williamson, who are in their 50s.
"She is strength, and I am speed; so lightning and thunder," said Jeff.
If you still need a reason to push yourself to the limit, Staff Walker told me why he still competes.
"For my health and because I enjoy it," said Staff.
Take it from a 91-year old who is still passing the fitness torch from one generation to the next.
"I want to be like him when I grow up, absolutely," said Rita.
Annual event promotes active aging
The San Diego Senior Athletic Games is an annual event promoting active aging and fostering a sense of community among senior athletes.

That year, 143 athletes entered the games in nine different sports. The following year, 295 athletes participated. By 1990, 452 athletes had joined the competition.
