Zip lines and ocean views: Catalina Island's latest offerings charm visitors

Discover Catalina Island's latest offerings, from zip-lining adventures to a new waterfront restaurant and biergarten, perfect for a stress-free holiday escape.

AVALON, Calif. — Catalina Island, just 22 miles off the coast of Los Angeles, offers new attractions and experiences that make it an ideal destination for holiday getaways.

The island's newest waterfront restaurant, Pier 24, offers visitors stunning ocean views alongside their meals.

Visitors can enjoy a twenty-burger with a million-dollar view. Across the street, the recently opened Flx Beer Garden adds a touch of history to the island's drinking scene. A Flx is an old Catalina tour bus from the 50s. Visitors can see an old relic as part of the unique atmosphere at the outdoor venue.

For thrill-seekers, the Catalina Island Zip Line Eco Tour offers a two-hour adventure above Descanso Canyon. That's where we found three sisters, Tracy, Lisa, and Kelly, looking for thrills but stunned by the beauty.

"I've never been here, but you hear about it, and it is beyond what I expected," said one of the sisters.

The tour features five zip lines, on which riders can reach speeds up to 35 mph while soaring hundreds of feet above the ground.

Catalina's appeal extends beyond its new offerings.

The island has been a backdrop for over 500 movies, attracting celebrities like Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. In recent years, tourists have seen Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift and Barbara Streisand.

First-time visitors are impressed by the island's charm.

"Oh, I love it. There are so many shops, such nice scenery, everything is beautiful," said a member of the Zavala family from El Paso.

With its blend of natural beauty, Hollywood history, and new attractions, Catalina Island continues to be a popular destination.

"It's a nice getaway from the stress of everyday life," another visitor remarked.

Most visitors take the Catalina Express to reach the island. We took the boat out of Dana Point, but there are also ports available in Long Beach and San Pedro. For more information about a Catalina getaway, click here
