Coronado's, 'Cait Conquers' takes home two awards at the San Diego County Fair for her 'Tea Towel Dress'

Social media star spent 500 hours making the dress that everyone is talking about.

DEL MAR, Calif. — A dress made out of 'Tea Towels' is winning awards at the San Diego County Fair.

In this Zevely Zone, I went to the Del Mar Fairgrounds to revisit with the social media star who made it.

A few weeks ago, we profiled Cait Conquers from her sewing studio in Coronado. Cait created a dress made out of Tea Towels and entered it at the San Diego County Fair. The mother of three met us at the fair so she could show us her famous dress in person. "This is the entire sewing section at the fair and it encompasses a lot of genres I specifically entered into the upcycling category."

Cait Conquers has two million followers on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram and she asked them to send her tea towels from all over the world.

"This is my baby, this is the dress, here she is. Better or worse than you imagined Jeff?" asked Cait.

I responded, "It's glorious."

But would the judges at the fair think the same?

"When she posted about the dress it blew up that video went super viral," said Home Made Exhibit coordinator Elena Liu. She says the Tea Towel dress is a fair favorite. "Well people are going crazy. I mean is the fair not the perfect place to showcase what she has created," said Elena.

"It's really exciting to meet Cait, I mean this is really cool," said one fan.

During our interview, Cait was surrounded by several fans.

"It was a labor of love," said Cait.

She made the dress out of 600 tea towels and with the two hundred she had left over she handcrafted a matching jacket. "It's so good, it's so good," said Cait with a big smile when I tried it on.

Cait won second place in the upcycling competition but her big prize was the Channa Mannen Award.

"It's for excellence for original design and it's a special award that the fair gives out," said Cait.

"It's nice to see people looking at it and see all of the different states and places that we put in there."

It took Cait 500 hours to finish the project and we all want to thank her for dressing up the San Diego County Fair.

"I'm getting emotional because it's amazing to see other people see it and enjoy it," said Cait.

She put everything she had into that dress.

"Don't make me cry Jeff, I did, I did, and I had it on my heart that I wanted it displayed and for people to see it and for that to happen and for so many people to be able to see it here at the fair is a dream come true. It's amazing," said Cait. "If you're in San Diego please come take a look at it take a picture with it."

The 'Tea Towel' dress will remain on display until the last day of the fair which is Sunday, July 7. For more information on Cait Conquers, click here.
