EL CAJON, Calif. — If you're feeling the stress of Election Day, you're not alone.
In this Zevely Zone, I head to El Cajon, where a free donut hole giveaway is something we can all agree on.
I was searching for common ground on Election Day and thought donuts would be a safe subject. But according to my Zevely Zone polling, not everyone likes donuts.
My research shows a whopping 96% of Americans love donuts, which means shockingly 4% of Americans do not like donuts. I have volunteered to eat their share and humbly offer this story to ease your election stress.
Like the American people, donuts come in all shapes and sizes, yet at their core, they are essentially made from flour and sugar.
"I feel like the country is divided for sure," said Joy Romey.
Romey owns Main Street Donuts and Deli in El Cajon. She wants to sprinkle some joy on your Election Day by giving away free donut holes while supplies last to help with any possible anxiety.
"Election stress," said customer Jan Nichols, hoping for a peaceful election. "I just feel all of the rhetoric that we are seeing online and everywhere else is causing undue stress," said Jan.
Her co-worker Alex Miller is looking forward to no more robocalls. "I think the election stress comes from completing the act and getting out and voting," said Alex.
Another donut customer, Tyrece Smith, told me he is tired of the negativity. "I just feel it's messing with our children," said Tyrece.
When you're looking for the pulse of the population in El Cajon, you come to Main Street.
"Really, you do. Especially in this neighborhood, everyone is recognized," said Joy, who also whipped up some Patriotic Pastries. "Wow, red, white and blue donuts," I said before passing them out.
A deli customer named Sam Kazkorkis has been following the election closely. Sam was once a refugee from Iraq.
"You guys are very nice," said Sam while nibbling on a donut. America is number one," said Sam.
Donuts are awesome, and so is this country we all get to call home.
"Everyone has a right to vote, and I love that everyone has a voice," said Tyrece.
"There's a lot about our country that is wonderful," said Jan. We're counting votes today, not donut holes and it's fitting the person behind it all is named Joy.
I'll bet you dollars to donuts; a bit of joy is just what we all need on Election Day.
"This is what I always wanted, just a little coffee shop, and here I am," said Joy with tears in her eyes. "I am grateful."
Happy Election Day to everyone! "Don't forget to vote," said Joy. Main Street Donuts and Deli is open in El Cajon from 6 am to 3 pm on Election Day. Joy will offer free donut holes while supplies last. For more information about the business, click here.
