SAN DIEGO — They say sharing a common interest with your spouse can lead to a successful marriage.
In this Zevely Zone, I meet a San Diego couple that's spent 43 years riding the 'Happy Trails' of love.
When you meet that someone special you promise to be by their side forever on a mountain bike.
"I spotted him and he had long lanky blonde hair," said Patty Mooney.
On Valentine's Day in 1982, Patty and Mark Schulze locked eyes and fell in love. "I thought she was one of the most beautiful women I had seen," said Mark.
Patty added, "I call him 'the ingredient' because you put him into any party situation and the place livens up."
The San Carlos couple share a love for each other and mountain biking.
"Here comes Patty Mooney, go Patty go," yelled Mark during one of their mountain biking races.
The couple even got married on a trail and then traveled the world side by side. They mountain biked in Greece, Switzerland, Polynesia and many more places around the globe. Patty and Mark are award-winning filmmakers.
In 1987, they produced one of the world's first 'how-to' mountain bike videos.
The video starts with them on bikes saying, "Glad you could join us. We love mountain biking. That's why we made this video. To make training videos and not make you crash on your head, ha, ha."
They made a total of four mountain biking videos. One of which made a big splash.
"Oh, that was Costa Rica," laughed Patty.
The video shows Patty and Mark on a boat with scuba tanks on their backs. "We are sitting on the edge of the boat and just kind of go over with the bike into the splash," said Patty.
There is footage of them riding 65 feet deep at the bottom of the ocean. "We invented scuba biking," laughed Mark. "We are the first people to do a lot of things on mountain bikes"
Patty is probably the first 69-year-old to have two total knee replacements and win so many trophies and stand alone on the podium.
"I'd like to see more women, so I can kick their (butts)," said Patty.
After 43 years together, it's 'til death do they part on mountain bikes. "There's not many people who play and work together," said Mark. When Patty is on the winner's podium, nobody yells louder for her. "I'm yelling, yes, go Patty. She is the best, best friend," said Mark.
