ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A Valley Center man who works as a banquet food server just completed a monster skateboarding trip from Mexico to Canada.
In this Zevely Zone, I met a free spirit who likes to roll with the punches. If you planned a trip from Mexico to Canada, you would think to take a car or a plane, but certainly not a skateboard. 29-year-old Cameron Fry completed a 33-day skateboarding session in Tijuana, Mexico, ending in Vancouver, Canada.
"This is the board that took me the whole way," said Cameron.
I asked him if he had a name for his journey.
"Well, technically I called it the 'Shred-tastic Voyage,'" said Cameron.
He didn't tell anyone about his crazy idea, until two weeks before he left and mostly kept the trip a secret.
"Yeah, for a like a year," said Cameron.
He didn't want anyone to try to talk him out of it, but even he began to second guess his trip when he faced 110-degree heat.
"Yes, I think that was the first day when I questioned what am I doing out here. Is it safe?" said Cameron. He slept in hotels except when there wasn't one. "I slept in a tent once because there was no way to get from the hotel to the next hotel," said Cameron.
He also packed and ate light.
"Beef jerky, trail mix, power bars," said Cameron.
I asked him if he had any close calls. "Yeah, I mean a couple of cars got pretty close," said Cameron.
Which is why, he mostly skateboarded on side roads.
"Instead of going on the freeways, I wasn't allowed to go on the freeways. I was kind of veering off," said Cameron.
At one point, Cameron ran out of road, which is kind of a problem when you are riding a skateboard. "Yes. Exactly," he laughed. After walking on dirt roads for miles, Cameron took a bus from Bakersfield to the California border and got back on the board. "That's when I got into Oregon and that was just a cool cruise through the mountains," said Cameron. "I got to Seattle to the Seattle Space Needle."
Cameron then made his way into Canada without much fanfare.
"Some people were like that's cool, or that's interesting, they didn't think it was too significant or anything," said Cameron.
That's okay, he didn't do it for attention. Cameron took the trip to celebrate receiving his Masters in clinical counseling. "I just really wanted to do something cool before I got too old," said Cameron. "Before I get a real job."
The future therapist now knows just how it feels to be on his own like a rolling stone. "I'd just say go for it," said Cameron. He went through two pairs of shoes on his skateboarding trip and traveled all by himself the whole way. If you'd like to learn more about Cameron's trip, click here.
