SAN DIEGO — 2024 may be a new year, but sharing a San Diego love story never gets old. In this Zevely Zone, I headed to Liberty Station where a husband and wife are celebrating 45 years of marriage. We recently celebrated the Liberty Station Centennial Anniversary and for nearly half that time two love birds made San Diego their nest.
"This is the Naval Chapel here at NTC," said Deb Meyer. On May 6th, 1978, Scott Meyer and Deb Gray tied the knot. "This is our wedding album," said Deb.
I commented, "Oh, what a pretty dress. That is your A game right there." And the groom? "That is Scott wasn't he cute, ha, ha, ha," laughed Deb. "That's a power couple if I've ever seen one," I remarked.
A patriotic power couple who worked for the FBI for decades and held a special connection to Liberty Station. "This is memory lane for us," said Deb. "My dad was in boot camp here." Leonard Gray served in the Navy for 21 years.
"This is my dad's brick, Leonard Gray," said Deb while showing me a brick memorializing her father. "My dad owed everything he was to the Navy," said Deb. When he was out to sea, her mother was in charge.
"Behind every great man is a great woman," said Deb. "Mom would feed us Chef Boyardee spaghetti three nights a week and cream tuna on toast."
"This is Mom's rose bush. This plant was planted in honor of my mom," said Deb. "We love and miss you every day." The roses continue to bloom and so does their love.
"It's a magical place for us," said Deb who tells us their lifelong romance thrived because opposites attract. "I think so," said Scott. He loves to take orders and Deb's loves to give them. "It's a 25-75 relationship, ha, ha, ha," laughed Deb.
They haven't been back to the old chapel in years, but never lost a step. I walked them down for one last lap. "Deb and Scott, I now re-pronounce you husband and wife," I said.
"Thank you," they laughed before kissing. "You've kissed me more in the last five minutes than you have in five months," said Deb.
Deb & Scott Meyer; a Liberty Station love story. The couple was able to get married at the Naval Chapel because of her father's military service. For more information about visiting Liberty Station, click here.
