Roller skating returns to Hotel Del Coronado for first time since 1939

Roller skating available seven days a week until Labor Day, September 2.

CORONADO, Calif. — What's old is new again at San Diego County's most picturesque oceanfront hotel.

In this Zevely Zone, I laced up a pair of roller skates and hit the rink at Hotel Del Coronado

When you think of skating at the Hotel Del, an ice rink and winter probably come to mind, but summertime roller skating is on a roll too.

In the early 1900s, guests at Hotel Del could stay at what was called "Tent City" and roller skate their brains out for three dollars a week.

"In 1906, we put up our first roller skating rink and called it 'The Fad' and it lasted for two years," said Gina Petrone, the Heritage Manager at Hotel Del Coronado.

Petrone said the rolling skating rink returned in 1937 for another two years before management abandoned the idea...until now.

For the first time in past eight decades, you can once again let the good times roll at The Del.

Along with the smiles, we couldn't help but notice how many little ones were taking a tumble and learning the sport for the first time.

"Are you alright?" I asked a skater named Destiny.

"Yeah, thank you," she said with a huge smile after taking a spill.

For 28 dollars, visitors can enjoy 90 minute sessions in the rink, a price that includes skates.

"Everybody needs a skating buddy, here we go, here we go," I said while assisting a skater named Tolani.

We watched one mother teach her son how to skate by having him hang on to the wall.

I asked them if they signed an accident waiver.

"We did yes, and it was very clear that we are taking our lives into our hands," laughed Dianna McKay.

I saw a lot of parents showing their kids how it's done.

For people over 50, roller skating must come with muscle memory.

The Del's 'Tent City' used to be called the Coney Island of the West. It's where guests can once again enjoy cocktails, snacks and theme nights such as Rock around the Rink Mondays, Throwback Thursdays and Saturday Disco Fever.

The rink is open seven days a week for anyone brave enough to try.

"You got this, you got this," I said to my new friend named Tolani who is visiting San Diego from Nigeria.

From now until Labor Day you can enjoy the ocean breeze, The Hotel Del, memories and more, all 'rolled' into one. "It's wonderful to see something from the past come back into the present," said Gina.

A portion of the skating proceeds benefit The C4 Foundation which supports active-duty Navy SEALs and their families. For more information on the roller skating prices and times, click here.
