'Spooky Pawty': Chula Vista Animal Services offers 'Free Adoptions' on October 26

CBS 8 is a proud media partner for the 'Clear the Shelter Open House' event on Saturday, October 26 for dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters & more!

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — CBS 8 is teaming up with Chula Vista's Animal Services Department for a free adoption 'Open House' event this Saturday, October 26.

In this Zevely Zone, I preview Saturday's event that will offer free adoptions for dogs, cats, rabbits and many more types of animals. Chula Vista's Animal Services Department is celebrating their 101st Anniversary "Spooky Pawty" event on October 26, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The 'Clear the Shelter' style event celebrates the department's 101 years of existence and also offers FREE adoptions on all animals that day.

During our visit, I met a nice dog named Tilly. She is a Husky-mix and one of a hundred dogs animals lovers could take home for free on Saturday.

"I am excited," said Viviana Castellanos.

The shelter's public information specialist is asking animal lovers to bring their big hearts but leave their checkbooks at home. "Free means free, zero fees," said Viviana.

Chula Vista's shelter has been over capacity for three years. The problem got so dire in recent months the staff was forced to install temporary kennels but they are still bursting at the seams.

"This is Starla," said Deputy Director Ashley Milo says in honor of the shelter's one hundred and first birthday, they're opening their doors to all animal lovers.

"We looking for adopters, we are looking for volunteers, we are looking for are fosters and dog walkers. People who are ready to help these guys in whatever way they can," said Ashley.

"This is our cattery. We have a lot of kittens during kitten season," said Viviana.

In order to clear the shelter every animal is free in the month of October.

"My husband is in need of a puppy for his birthday," said Monica Bucio who told me there's nothing spooky about a deal like this. "I think it's a great opportunity and I hope a lot people come to the event," said Monica.

"All we are asking for is an adoption application and for people to open up their homes to these animals," said Viviana.

The staff is asking adopters to fill out applications online in advance so when they show up they won't have to stand in long lines. Participants will receive goody bags with treats, toys and vouchers for free vet exams. Starbucks will serve free drinks for people and pup cups for the dogs.

"It's a little treat that they get to enjoy as a congratulations for hopefully getting adopted," said Viviana.

Every animal will be spayed, neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.

"Yeah, so everybody is ready to go," said Viviana who told us people can adopt dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters and more.

If a pet lover has ever wanted to adopt an animal this is the best time to do it.

"Yes. If you are looking for an animal, if you know someone who is looking for an animal, October 26 is the date is the time to find the right one for you," said Viviana.

That could also include, a bird, snake, iguana or even a little piggy who wants to run all the way home with you. CBS 8 is honored to serve as a media partner for this event. We are really trying to get the word out to the public to help make the event a huge success.

"We are thankful for everything you guys are doing and hopefully we are able to get these guys homes," said Viviana.

This Saturday's event is open to everyone, not just Chula Vista residents. Remember to fill out an online adoption application in advance. For more information, click here.
