Long lines out the door after DMV computers crash

CLAIREMONT (CBS 8) - The lines were out the door at the DMV Monday after the computers crashed. The glitch is causing a huge back-up.

According to a spokesperson at the Department of Motor Vehicles, a router problem prevented  computers statewide from talking to one another. The shut down made it impossible for 40 branches to conduct most transactions, such as license and registration renewals.

After hours of frustration by DMV customers, the problem was fixed sometime Monday afternoon.

The DMV tells News 8 it understands, with three Friday furlough days a month, added computer problems are putting people in a bind.  Similar shut downs plagued the DMV last summer.

A spokesperson apologized for the problem but insisted the router problem is not a funding issue. The DMV says they have bright people running their network and these are random malfunctions.

In this News 8 video story, Jeff Zevely has more from the Clairemont DMV.
