"Everyone has a story and it's a privilege to give San Diegans a voice every day. Oh, and having the best weather in the country doesn't hurt either."

Southern California native Matt Johnson makes his way back home his doing what he loves best, reporting the news.

While attending California State University, Northridge, Matt quickly discovered news is a natural fit.

Reporting for the campus radio station, Matt captured a Golden Mike Award, Edward R. Murrow and the Mark Twain AP Award. After earning a bachelor's degree in Journalism, Matt began his career at KXXV-TV, the ABC affiliate in Waco, Texas. As the Killeen Bureau Chief, his passion for investigative journalism uncovered the city hall scandal which rocked the Waco community, resulting in a recall election and exposed animal cruelty at a local pet store.

From there, Matt landed a general assignment reporting job at KATV in Little Rock, Arkansas, covering breaking news. He received the Associated Press award for Best Continuing Coverage.

"Growing up I'd always see the local news vans on the move, wondering where they're headed. Now, it's exhilarating to always be on the go chasing down the answers."

As a member of CBS News 8's reporting team, Matt brings his innate curiosity and quest to deliver the story to San Diegans. Matt is an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists. When he's not covering the news, you'll find him keeping up with the live music scene, jogging along our coastline and exploring the hiking trails.
