Mayor Faulconer paves plans to fix potholes

Mayor Kevin Faulconer is rolling up his sleeves and getting to work with city crews at La Playa and Yosemite Street in Pacific Beach Tuesday morning.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Mayor Kevin Faulconer is keeping his campaign promise to repair roads around San Diego County.

Putting his plan into action, Mayor Faulconer put on a brightly colored, safety vest and hit the ground running Tuesday morning, tackling one street and one pothole at a time.

The effort to fix San Diego’s roads is part of the mayor's One San Diego project, which will double the amount of repairs on streets since he took office in 2014 and aims to fix 1,000 miles of roadways over five years.

"It's all about need and putting dollars in the city budget into the neighborhoods where it should be going,” said Mayor Faulconer who also increased funding for the project, giving city workers the ability to fix roads in every neighborhood.

Mayor Faulconer and city workers were in Pacific Beach at 6:00 a.m. Thursday shoveling asphalt at Yosemite Street and La Playa Avenue. His work on San Diego streets comes a day after his work in New York when he met with the NFL regarding the City of San Diego’s fight to keep the Chargers.

"I really appreciate the mayor. It's time to do some repairs,” said Pacific Beach resident Scott Bohnen.

The city's asphalt repair crews will fill about 27,000 potholes every year and approximately 300 miles of streets will be fixed during this fiscal year.

One Uber driver said it's a welcome sight to see repair work in his neighborhood especially before the predicted El Niño.

"You'll be driving and bam you hit a pothole and your car really takes a jerk," explained Frank Clementi.

City crews will be working Friday in Todd Gloria's District 3, which includes downtown San Diego, Hillcrest and North Park.
