Message behind wave of new murals across San Diego

Art lovers - prepare to be dazzled because a series of ocean-themed murals are appearing all over San Diego County.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Art lovers - prepare to be dazzled because a series of ocean-themed murals are appearing all over San Diego County.

The Surfrider Foundation and another non-profit are behind the community art project that includes 21 large murals painted on the sides of buildings around the county with a simple message - the oceans are in trouble.

Tre Packard is the founder of the PangeaSeed Foundation - a non-profit that has organized the painting of more than 300 murals around the world since 2014.

The artwork going up around San Diego deals with topics ranging from killer whale captivity and the consequences of plastic in oceans, to saving endangered species and climate change.

Tracy Thalo at Artist and Craftsman Supply in Hillcrest cannot believe the transformation of her once boring grey wall. The message behind the mural - pesticides in the flower industry are harmful to the ocean. It's a problem Thalo admits never crossed her mind.

All the artists, including Askew from New Zealand, are donating their time to the project. Askew's message is as solid as the walls he paints - responsible consumption.
