Mira Mesa steps up public transportation

Mira Mesa is stepping up its public transportation for Miramar College students and the surrounding community.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Mira Mesa is stepping up its public transportation for Miramar College students and the surrounding community.

Wednesday was the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the Miramar College Transit Station and the Mira Mesa direct access ramp.

The new station on Hillery Drive connects the college to downtown and the northern part of the county. The direct access ramp makes it so the public transit can enter the HOV lanes without interfering with traffic that might already be on Interstate 15.

"We're providing faster service, limited stops. But not only that, but it's really a hub for all the local busses as well to come in here," MTS Board of Directors Chairman Harry Mathis said.

According to the Metropolitan Transit System, 95 million people rode public transit in the year ending in June 30, 2014. The new upgrades are expected to increase that number.
