National math contest held in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Some of the country's top high school math students were in San Diego Thursday for the American Mathematical Society's national math contest.

Ten students competed in the 2013 "Who Wants to be a Mathematician" contest at the San Diego Convention Center.

The student with the most points after answering some tough math questions would win $10,000.

Among those competing was 16-year-old Vista High School junior Allan Garry.

"We had a qualifying test that I took because I'm in the math club at my school, and I did well enough that I was able to be the representative for San Diego County," Allan said.

Allan didn't win the top prize, but he was cheered on by his fellow Vista High classmates. He says he plans to major in engineering or physics.
