New library branch to open in Otay Ranch Town Center

A new branch library for the city of Chula Vista will be located in a 3,500-square-foot space in Otay Ranch Town Center, mall officials announced Monday.

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A new branch library for the city of Chula Vista will be located in a 3,500-square-foot space in Otay Ranch Town Center, mall officials announced Monday.

The library, expected to open by the end of this year, will be open five days per week, for a total of about 35 hours per week. The center is located just east of the state Route 125 toll road and south of Olympic Parkway.

"We set out to create a win-win partnership where the mall could create an attractive amenity that benefits the community and the city of Chula Vista would gain a low-cost, user-friendly library outlet in eastern Chula Vista," said Betty Waznis, director of the Chula Vista Public Library.

Three retail spaces on the west side of the mall's food pavilion will be merged to house the library.

"The new library will offer great services to our guests, including free wi-fi that will overflow into the food pavilion area -- yet another good reason to spend time here," said Tim Colby, senior general manager of the shopping center.

The library's small size will keep it from having a full collection, but it will take advantage of the city's floating storage strategy in which books are shelved at the branches where they are returned. Customers will also be able to order books from other locations and pick them up in one or two days.

The library also has branches at the Civic Center and southern portion of the city on Orange Avenue.
