SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - San Diego officials and AT&T will host a ribbon cutting Thursday to celebrate what appears to be a new North Park water tower, but the structure is actually a disguised cell tower.

The new cell site is located at the intersection of Boundary Street and Meade Avenue in North Park, adjacent to the 805 freeway.

AT&T says it will help customers get the most out of their mobile devices and provide better network connectivity for streaming videos, sharing on social media, and texting.

To celebrate, AT&T is hosting a ribbon cutting Thursday with assembly member Todd Gloria and San Diego council member Chris Ward.

“We know how important it is for our customers to stay connected,” Ignacio De La Torre, Assistant Vice President of External Affairs at AT&T. “We want to provide the best possible mobile experience, and we invest in our local network to accomplish that goal.”

The upgrade is part of AT&T’s ongoing effort to increase speed, add capacity and expand the availability of its network using the latest technology.

AT&T is laying the foundation for mobile 5G, which AT&T plans to bring to parts of San Diego in early 2019.
