OB Pier reopens, high surf advisory still in effect

High surf and tides caused Ocean Beach Municipal Pier at 5099 Niagara Ave. to be closed Saturday.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Lifeguards closed the Ocean Beach Municipal Pier for four hours Saturday as high surf swept beneath the concrete landmark during a late-morning high tide.

San Diego Lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma said the pier was reopened at 1 p.m., but might be closed again Sunday as conditions warrant.

The National Weather Service said there was a high surf advisory along the San Diego coast.

"Surf height was high, 7 to 10 feet, along exposed west-facing shores," National Weather Service forecaster Mike Watkins said.

Watkins said riptide potential was high. "There are very strong currents and dangerous swimming conditions," he said.

Wave sets were up to 12 feet in some places and high surf was strongest along the San Diego coast south of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Watkins said.
