SAN YSIDRO (CBS 8) - Dozens of people voiced opposition against a proposed natural gas power plant that would open next to the Otay Mesa Energy Center.
SDG&E has rev ivied plans for the Pio Pico Energy Center which would serve customers with a more stable source of energy while the company works to obtain more renewable energy in accordance with state law, according to SDG&E.
On Tuesday, more than fifty people gathered outside the San Ysidro Middle School to hold signs and perform demonstrations in opposition to Pio Pico's future development. Inside the school, the Environmental Protection Agency held a public comment meeting where both local residents and out-of-town activists voiced their environmental concerns.
Some who live within a mile and a half of the proposed site said they were concerned their asthma would become worse with the construction of a second power plant.
Pio Pico cannot open without a specific pollution permit from the EPA. The agency has not set a timetable for when it's expected to make its decision.
