SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - On the outside it's inspirational. On the inside, three University City High School students helped make their Class of 2013 yearbook offensive.
Underneath the names of three seniors are sexually explicit comments too suggestive for us to show on TV. The comments reference sex acts with not-so-subtle innuendo quickly discovered by adults.
We were told about the vulgar quotes by a University City High parent who was outraged after finding the messages within a few minutes of flipping pages.
The $90 yearbook was released this week but the district says that somehow the sexual statements were overlooked by staff proofreaders.
In a letter to parents and students, the principal says:
"Each year, some of our students do not use good judgment... For that reason, we have several staff members read through the entire yearbook before it is sent to press.
"Unfortunately, there are a few 'messages' that slipped through our review. Our entire staff, and I'm sure a vast majority of our students, regret if anyone has been offended by these statements."
The school parent did not want to be identified but tells us children who wrote the quotes should have been protected from their own immaturity.
University City High principal Jeff Olivero says his school will take a more detailed look at yearbook quotes in future years.
