SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A medical examiner found unexplained injuries on the body of a 62-year-old tourist who was found dead on the grounds of a Mission Bay hotel where she had been staying with her husband and homicide detectives are investigating the death, police said Saturday.

Gale Yonai of Montebello was found shortly before 11:30 p.m. Thursday face-down, unconscious and unresponsive, in a man-made pond on the grounds of the Paradise Point Resort and Spa in the 1400 block of Vacation Rd., according to San Diego police and the county Medical Examiner's Office. Medics pronounced her dead at the scene.

Based on their preliminary investigation, police said Yonai left the couple's rented room to smoke while her husband was napping around 10:30 p.m. Thursday. He told police he called hotel security when he awoke about an hour later and could not find her, then joined in searching for her.

It originally appeared that Yonai had slipped, fallen and hit her head on a rock next to the scenic pool, but an autopsy revealed unexplained injuries, said Lt. Ernie Herbert of the San Diego Police Department's Homicide Unit. He did not specify the nature of the injuries.

Anyone with information about Yonai's death was asked to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293.
