SAN DIEGO — The race for California's next governor is getting more crowded as a San Diegan announced Friday she's entering the 2026 race.
State Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins made the announcement during a rally at the San Diego Air and Space Museum at Balboa Park.
She referenced her path that began in Virginia as the daughter of a lead miner. Atkins moved to San Diego in 1985.
"A path that for me today includes announcing my candidacy to serve as governor of California! I use that specific language for a reason. It’s never been my ambition to “be” governor. But it is my intention to serve as governor," said Senator Atkins.
If elected, she would be the first female Governor of California.
Senator Atkins launched her political career in San Diego, serving on the San Diego City Council, as interim mayor, and then moving onto the California State Assembly, and California State Senate.
The crowd Friday included several members of labor unions as well as fellow democratic politicians.
She spoke for about 15 minutes, talking about how much San Diego means to her. She also laid out her accomplishments as she worked her way up the political ladder.
She talked about fighting for affordable housing, healthcare for women and protecting victims of crime.
Governor Gavin Newsom terms out of office in 2026.
Fellow democrats who have already announced their candidacy for governor include Lt. Governor Elena Kounalakais and State Superintendent Tony Thurmond.
