SAN DIEGO — U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar visited San Diego on Tuesday, underscoring the critical importance of the relationship between the United States and Mexico, which has recently surpassed China as America's top trading partner.
"The CaliBaja region is the beating heart of the most dynamic economic relationship in the world," Salazar stated during his visit. He emphasized the interconnectedness of the border communities, adding, "You see the opportunities and you see the challenges."
The significance of this relationship was further highlighted by a recent trip to Mexico City by local political and business leaders, who met with the country's new administration.
Jerry Sanders, CEO and President of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce, who participated in the trip, explained the direct correlation between manufacturing in Mexico and job creation in San Diego.
"There's a lot of manufacturing in Tijuana, very sophisticated manufacturing, that a lot of companies based in San Diego use," Sanders said. He emphasized the importance of this cross-border economic synergy for the region's prosperity.
As the U.S. prepares for a potential change in administration, questions arise about the future of these cross-border relations. Sanders expressed cautious optimism: "There's always going to be a concern until we see what happens, but every administration, when they come in, talks about what they're going to do and then reality sets in and processes start. I think it'll be the same way here."
Ambassador Salazar also addressed the potential for improved border security, a key campaign promise of the incoming administration.
"This includes making sure we have cutting-edge technology, combined with the joint operations that are critical to curbing the trafficking of arms, drugs, and people," Salazar stated.
While acknowledging the uncertainties that come with a new administration, Salazar remains hopeful that the opportunities presented by a successful cross-border relationship will be recognized and prioritized.
