CAMPO (CNS) - The smoldering remnants of a fast-moving wildfire that blackened about 265 open acres in the far southeastern reaches of San Diego County was 100 percent contained as of late Friday afternoon.
An improperly extinguished campfire on private property sparked the back-country blaze off the 31000 block of state Route 94 in the Cameron Corners area of Campo about 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to Cal Fire.
Within 90 minutes, the flames had blackened roughly two dozen acres as crews worked to subdue them from the ground and aboard air tankers and water-dropping helicopters, said Issac Sanchez, a fire captain with the state agency.
As the blaze spread over hilly, rocky terrain, authorities advised residents along La Posta Road and North Campo Truck Trail that they might have to leave their homes. By Wednesday afternoon, crews had the spread of the fire halted, and the evacuation warnings were rescinded.
One firefighter sustained a minor injury while battling the blaze, Sanchez said.
No structural damage was reported.
