CORONADO (NEWS 8) - Cleanup and repairs continue in Coronado, after a massive water main break.
On Tuesday, a ruptured underground water line flooded roadways along several city blocks near Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado.
The broken 16-inch-diamater pipeline began inundating First Avenue and the 100 blocks of A and B avenues shortly after 3:30 p.m., Coronado police spokeswoman Lea Corbin said.
"Right now, no one is out of water. At NAB in particular, we have a million water tank in addition to the redundancy and storage capacity. There is no impact," said Laurie Scott, Naval Base Coronado.
According to the Navy, residents are not directly impacted, only by a road detour.
Because it is not a water emergency, crews will return Wednesday morning to make repairs.
No structural flooding was immediately reported, but "quite a few" vehicles wound up stranded in the submerged traffic lanes, Lea Corbin said.
The city's water-service provider determined that the failed water line is one operated by the military. Navy utility crews were called in to shut off the flow to the damaged pipe and make repairs, according to Corbin.
The Navy said once crews reach the pipe they will know how long repairs will take.
"The city and Navy are helping with the clan up effort. When things like this happen, a lot of sand goes up unto the streets. We are cleaning up all of the sand, as well as doing an initial assessment," said Laurie.
