Review: Living Without Magazine

Living Without, a magazine published for people with food allergies and sensitivities, is packed full of articles, tips, recipes and allergy friendly food options. The contributors are writers or chefs who specialize in allergy friendly food. The magazine has very defined sections, all aimed to help those with allergies and sensitivities:

Try It - features a few products for those with allergies and sensitivities

Read It - offers resources and cook books for baking and cooking with alternatives

Life Stories – in-depth stories about people diagnosed with allergies and diseases as well as how they deal with it in daily life

House call- Q&As with chefs and specialists answer questions about allergies, sensitivities and how to cook/bake to suit allergies as well as the latest in medical news

So Good- More than 20 recipes are integrated throughout the entire magazine. There are recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and everything in between. Additional tips for baking and cooking with different products and resources for finding out more about are listed, including helpful websites, video components online and shopping lists with products and brands that offer gluten-free and allergy friendly options.

Some of the recipes from the June/July 2012 issue are: Strawberry Shortcake, Blueberry Pancakes, Sweet Potato Cakes, Light Northern Italian Red Sauce, Summer Squash Lasagna, Asian Vegetables with Beef and Rice Noodles, Chocolate Beer Cake, Cream Cheese Frosting, and that's just the beginning — and they're all allergy friendly.

Features – the latest issue featured stories and tips about traveling with allergies, a guide to eating out, a summer brew guide, and a section packed with gluten-free, dairy-free pasta recipes

The quick start guide to starting a gluten-free diet and a guide to substitutions (Living Without pantry) are also extremely helpful for someone just discovering food sensitivities or allergies.

The advertisements are one of the most valuable parts of the magazine. Finding allergy friendly snacks and ingredients can be a challenge. All of the advertisements feature products that are "something"-free – dairy, gluten, egg, casein, nightshades, nut, soy, etc.

Livingwithout.com also offers additional resources such as more recipes and tips. A free newsletter is sent out with news, recipes and deals.

The biggest downside is the price. For six issues a year, it is $23. Other specialty magazines are about the same price. As someone with gluten and dairy allergies, I wouldn't hesitate to pay the price for the rich information offered in the magazine.

Free trial issues are available so readers can check it out. The company will send you a bill (possibly before you receive your copy), but you can write "No Thanks" on the bill if you don't want to continue the subscription.

Even if you choose not to continue the subscription, the wealth of knowledge and resources you'll receive from one issue is incredible. It's definitely an investment I'd recommend though.
