SAN DIEGO (CBS8) - A 9-week-old greater one-horned rhino calf is out enjoying her new home at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
Fluttering her little ears as she cautiously looks around, 9-week-old Anandi is an all star observer.
"She's curious and brave and she's got a lot of growth to happen for sure but she's going to be fine," said Peter Jones, Lead Mammal keeper.
Anandi, meaning "joyful" in Hindi, was born February 24 and since then, trainers have kept her and her mother in an off-exhibit area to allow time for the mother and calf to bond.
The greater one-horned rhinoceros used to be widespread in Southeast Asia, however, they are now typically found in India and Nepal. This species of rhino differs from others due to is armor-plated-appearance, but the armor is nothing more than a layer of skin with many folds.
Greater one horned rhinos are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, mainly due to habitat loss, poaching and growth of the illicit rhino horn trade. Experts estimate there are only 3,300 greater one-horned rhinos remaining in the wild. More than 70% of the population lives on a reserve at the Kaziranga National Park in India.
