SANDAG and Caltrans break ground on highway to future Otay Mesa POE

Officials say the proposed border improvements could lead to more efficient, predictable, and secure border crossings.

SAN DIEGO — SANDAG and Caltrans broke ground on the final segment of State Route 11, the highway to the future Otay Mesa East Port of Entry Wednesday.

According to officials, the SR-11 project is a joint venture between SANDAG and Caltrans, in collaboration with state and federal partners in the U.S. and Mexican governments to create a 21st century border crossing for the San Diego-Baja California region that will enhance regional mobility and fuel economic growth and binational trade.

Officials say the proposed border improvements could lead to more efficient, predictable, and secure border crossings by constructing a four-lane tolled road connecting directly to Customs & Border Protection Land Port of Entry and a California Highway Patrol Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility. Construction will complete the connection between SR 11, 125, and 905.

SANDAG and Caltrans have invested more than $1.3 billion in transportation infrastructure in the San Diego border region.
