SDPD honors officers who serve in the military

The San Diego Police Department paid tribute Thursday to officers who have taken time off from their jobs to serve in the military.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The San Diego Police Department paid tribute Thursday to officers who have taken time off from their jobs to serve in the military.

The department displays stars at police headquarters to honor those who serve.

On Thursday, officials retired the stars of department members who have returned from military service and rededicated the stars of members who remain on active duty.

"When their country called, they answered. They willingly gave up the comforts of family and home to go to distant and hostile lands, often into harm's way," SDPD Assistant Chief Lawrence McKinney said.

The department also rededicated the star of Officer Federico Borjas, who was killed while deployed in Afghanistan in 2008.
