SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University officials and Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, R-San Diego, paid respects Friday to students killed during military service.
The 15th annual ceremony, part of Homecoming Week activities on campus, took place on the lawn outside the trolley station because the War Memorial has been temporarily displaced by construction on a new student union building.
The memorial was dedicated in 1996 to 222 Aztecs who died on the battlefields of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. The SDSU Alumni Association's War Memorial Committee is working on a design that will add names of those who fell in more recent conflicts.
SDSU has 1,200 current students who are either veterans or active-duty military.
The Navy Band Southwest Ceremonial Band performed at the ceremony, which included a wreath laying and a flyover.
At 6 p.m., the fourth annual Aztec For Life Homecoming Celebration is scheduled at the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center, with proceeds benefiting the Marshall Faulk Foundation.
Homecoming events conclude Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. football game against TCU at Qualcomm Stadium.
