SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The fall semester begins Monday at San Diego State University campuses in the San Diego Community College District, and MiraCosta and Southwestern Colleges.

Around 13,000 new students will be among those starting classes at SDSU, including 8,500 undergraduates, plus undergraduate transfers and graduate students. According to SDSU, the freshman class will bring an average grade--point average of 3.69, with 22 members posting SAT scores of over 1,500.

The group of graduate students include three National Science Foundation fellows, four international Fulbright fellows, five campus Fulbright fellows and 20 presidential graduate research fellows.

The Susan and Stephen Weber Honors College at SDSU, which was officially endowed last semester, is welcoming its first class. The 245 new students will join those who were previously part of the honors program. The Weber Honors College was created to bring together top students to study in multiple disciplines, with an emphasis on problem solving and creative thinking.

Among recent changes to San Diego State's campus are a completed renovation of the iconic high-rise dormitory Zura Hall, demolition at the site of the future Engineering and Interdisciplinary Sciences Complex slated to open in January 2017, a remodeled computing center, and completion of a practice facility for the men's and women's basketball teams.

More than 53,000 students are enrolled at San Diego City, Mesa and Miramar colleges and the Continuing Education Center for the fall semester.

With some community colleges now able to offer certain bachelor's degrees, Mesa College will debut its new four-year program in Health Information Management. Also, a nursing partnership between City College and Point Loma Nazarene University will begin, with students able to receive instruction from PLNU on the City College campus.

Classes are already underway at Grossmont, Cuyamaca and Palomar colleges.

The fall semester begins a week from Monday at Cal State San Marcos, Sept. 1 at Point Loma Nazarene, and Sept. 2 at the University of San Diego. The fall quarter at UC San Diego opens Sept. 24.
