NATIONAL CITY (CBS 8) - Police say a man was running on Interstate 805 before he was struck and killed in National City overnight.
However, they haven't found the driver that crashed into him and left the scene. The California Highway Patrol says the victim was darting from the median to the side of the freeway in the northbound lanes of I-805 near the East Plaza Boulevard, when he was hit by a vehicle.
The CHP was called out after midnight when CHP, when it was dark and difficult for drivers to see. Authorities haven't been able to track down the person who caused the deadly hit-and-run.
A Toyota 4 Runner also ran into the victim, but the driver stopped on the shoulder to call 911. Two men and a child were in the SUV.
The CHP says the impact of the crash propelled the victim's body into the HOV lane.
It's possible the man may have been homeless, which would make it difficult to identify him.
"There's a potential that he may be a transient that's unknown at this time. We do have quite a number of transients in this section of the freeway,” said Sgt. Brad Denham with the CHP.
The CHP says they only have one witness at this time and no description of the first vehicle or the driver.
It's unclear why the man was running in the northbound lanes of I-805.
Police also warn drivers to be extra careful around areas with homeless encampments, where people have wandered onto the freeways. Specifically I-805 and SR-54 up to the Plaza Boulevard exit and I-5 at SR-94 through Front Street.
Police urge the public to call them immediately if you see a vehicle with possible heavy damage to the front, including the windshield, bumper and hood.
