Second trial begins for caregiver accused of abusing autistic man

VISTA (CBS 8) - A trial began Thursday for a second caregiver accused of abusing a severely autistic man under his care in Valley Center.

The two defendants in this abuse case were arraigned together, but then given two separate trials.

Matthew McDuffie, 28, is charged with multiple felony counts.

Another caregiver, Michael Dale Garritson, 62, was convicted of two felony abuse charges Monday. He faces a maximum of eight years in prison when he is sentenced in May.

Both men had worked for the victim's family for two years. Last August, the family set up a surveillance camera that documented the defendants' alleged abuse.

In this News 8 video story, Jeff Zevely has more on what happened in court Thursday.
