Skateboarding legend Victor Earhart dies at 70

A long-time legend in the local skateboarding community has died. Sector 9 skater Victor Earhart was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle on Friday.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego skateboarding legend Victor Earhart was killed last Friday when his motorcycle was struck by a Toyota Prius on Route-79.

Earhart was traveling at about 55 mph on southbound state Route 79, when his motorcycle struck a Toyota Prius being driven eastbound on state Route 76 by Rie Tobari-Zhou, 42, of Escondido.

Earhart hit the side of the Prius as Tobari-Zhou was pulling in front of him, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Mary Bailey.

An off-duty San Diego police officer happened upon the scene shortly after the collision and performed CPR on the motorcyclist until paramedics arrived, Bailey said.

Paramedics pronounced Earhart dead at the scene from blunt force trauma.

Tobari-Zhou suffered minor abrasions to her left hand, but was not taken to a hospital.

A 13-year-old boy from Escondido, who was a passenger in her car, received minor abrasions to his left arm but was also not hospitalized.

Another passenger in the car was a 46-year-old Escondido man who was not injured, Bailey said.

Sector 9 released a statement on the passing of the skateboarding legend which reads:

With a heavy heart, we bring the news that long time 9'er, Victor Earhart, passed away this weekend. He was struck by a car while riding his motorcycle out on highway 79 Friday morning and was killed instantly. Victor worked at Sector 9 for 15 years during which time he performed a number of jobs as well as being a team rider. Most of all, he was a great ambassador for skateboarding and a legend to many. He was always down to ride skateboards rain or shine, dirt or asphalt. He was very loved by all and will be sorely missed in the skateboard community. A skate service will be held in honor of Victor and we’ll keep you informed on details once those plans are made.
