Police arrested a man suspected of killing a customer during a robbery in the Arco am/pm store on Balboa Avenue that happened on Thursday morning.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Police arrested a man suspected of killing a customer during a robbery in the Arco am/pm store on Balboa Avenue that happened on Thursday morning.

The suspect was arrested following a shootout with police in an apartment complex in City Heights Saturday morning.

Ahmed Hassan Mumin, a 30 year-old Somalian man, is in serious but stable condition after being struck in the torso by a bullet, homicide San Diego Police Department Lt. Paul Rorrison said.

Police received a tip that a "prowler with a handgun" was sighted just before 1 a.m. at an apartment complex on the 3800 block of Winona Ave.

Police conducted surveillance, and then moved into the complex just before 3 a.m. They were met with gunfire from an empty unit, where Mumin was held up.

Officers returned fire and shot Mumin in the torso. Mumin is believed to be the gunman in the fatal shooting at the Clairemont Arco station.

Eric Schade was shot to death around 3:45 a.m. Thursday at the Arco am/pm gas station in 6100 block of Balboa Avenue. Police said it all started when Schade made his regular stop at the convenience store. He chatted with the clerk, and then, the suspect entered the store.

"He was armed with a hand gun, he came inside and confronted both our clerk and our victim ordering them the ground. He also ordered the clerk to empty the cash register. The clerk complied with his request and demands, and then went on the floor behind the counter," said San Diego police Lt. Paul Rorrison.

The clerk said he heard a verbal exchange between the suspect and customer, then a gun shot.

"Our officers arrived on scene in about two minutes. They located a 48-year-old male inside the business on the floor. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest," said Rorrison. "He was transported immediately once medics arrived to Sharp Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased about an hour later."

The suspect took off on foot and headed north. Police officers said all they were able to locate was some money nearby and a hat, which may belong to the suspect.
