SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center announced Friday that it will be renamed the Fleet Science Center, effective Friday.
Center officials said they embarked in 2014 on a series of studies about the facility's future that resulted in a strategic plan centered on a transformation from a Balboa Park museum to "a county-wide organization devoted to building and supporting communities rich in science learning."
The plan includes an expansion of educational relationships to provide teacher professional development, science workshops and after-school programs in support of both teachers and students. It also includes partnering with community organizations to bring science into San Diego neighborhoods and developing new experiences at the science center.
"While working on the strategic plan, we realized the direction we were charting was a departure from the associations people typically have of the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center," said Steven Snyder, CEO of the re-branded Fleet Science Center.
"Most people tend to think of us as the science center in Balboa Park with the IMAX dome theater, planetarium and hands-on exhibits," Snyder said. "The Fleet Science Center is evolving to a county-wide organization that reaches across all of San Diego."
He said the center will strive to be out in the community and engage people in science, no matter their age or background.
The center's web address will change from rhfleet.org to fleetscience.org Friday at 10 a.m.
