ENCINITAS (CNS) - Authorities Monday shut down a freeway off-ramp in Encinitas after a load of trash being hauled by a tractor trailer caught fire, sending debris onto the ramp.
Someone spotted the smoke billowing from the bed of the big rig about 3:45 p.m. on the off-ramp from northbound Interstate 5 to Birmingham Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Firefighters reported the blaze as knocked down by about 4:15 p.m., and had requested clean-up assistance from Caltrans, a North County Fire Protection District dispatcher said.
A SigAlert was issued as a result of the incident.
