ESCONDIDO (NEWS 8) – A 40-foot eucalyptus tree fell down in Escondido Friday after a series of storms left a mess across San Diego County.
It happened around 4:15 a.m. at Fig Street and 3rd Avenue. Police say no one was inside a home nearby, where the tree had fallen.
Jonathan Brothers lives near the street where the tree fell. “Came out at six in the morning and saw the whole tree came down. We were sleeping, obviously. We thought someone was breaking into the house initially.”
Jonathan said his baby, Wesley, was inside the home at the time.
The tree did block the roadway for several hours until crews swiftly got it out of the way, but did not land on anyone or anything, according to police. “City of Escondido crew cleaned it up in about one hour. It was pretty remarkable,” said Jonathan.
In Clairmont, Crown Point Clippers Tree Service crews were busy cutting a 55-foot tree from a family’s backyard. “The clients were worried that it may in the future fall,” said Ken Hinze.
Another tree went down overnight in Ocean Beach following Thursday’s storm. Crews spent the evening removing the 20-foot tall tree that fell near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Del Monte Avenue.
Police said no one was injured.
This follows other trees that have fallen recently, two of them in Point Loma Heights, one of which killed two people staying on the top level of a home.
Hinze suggested yearly tree trimming and inspections – which usually take under an hour.
