Two people rescued after falling off cliff

Lifeguards come to the rescue of two people after they slip and fall off a cliff in Point Loma.

POINT LOMA (CBS 8) - Lifeguards come to the rescue of two people after they slip and fall off a cliff in Point Loma.

Large waves made the rescue more difficult for the lifeguard crew. Life guards were originally out at Sunset Cliffs to rescue a swimmer who was caught in a rip current.

"As you know surf is up here in SD, and a large wave knocked a girl off the reef and into the water. She attempted to crawl back up but the waves were too big," Lt. Andy Lerum said.

When she couldn't get out, her friend jumped in and helped her to the other side of the cove. That's where they waited for lifeguards.

"We hoisted the two uninjured people out one at a time, and they're fine now," Lt. Lerum said.

The high surf has kept lifeguards very busy, and Sunset Cliffs is no stranger to rescues. In fact, the area has it's own special rig for rescues.

"This vehicle is specifically built for the purpose of Sunset Cliffs. Cliffs are about 80-100 feet in length, hoist has the capability of lifting up loads of 600 pounds, and we use it on down here," Lt. Lerum said.

The two people in Sunday's rescue made it out without any injuries. But with the way the water's been, there will likely be many more.

"When the surf is up here in Sunset Cliffs, it is a very dangerous place to be in the water," Lt. Lerum said.
