Woman killed in apparent murder-suicide shooting in Oceanside

A woman was killed and a man gravely wounded Wednesday afternoon in a suspected murder-suicide attempt at a North County condominium complex.

OCEANSIDE (CNS) - An Oceanside man remained on life support Thursday after allegedly killing his 25-year-old live-in girlfriend in what appeared to be an apparent murder-suicide attempt at their San Luis Rey-area condominium.

Someone who knew the couple heard gunshots inside the residence at 4215 Vista del Rio Way shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday. He entered the condo, saw blood seeping out from underneath an interior doorway, backed out and called for help, Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Cosby said.

Officers sent to the address found Kirsten Jelinski and her boyfriend, who has yet to be publicly identified, on the floor of their master bedroom with gunshot wounds to their heads, Cosby said. A pistol lay nearby.

Jelinski died at the scene. Cosby said the man was flown to a hospital, where he was placed on life support.

Preliminary evidence suggested that the man shot Jelinski and then shot himself, though detectives were not absolutely ruling out the possibility that an unidentified third person could have been responsible, Cosby said.

There was no immediate indication of a motive for the crime, he said.

Jelinski attended Mission Hills and San Marcos high schools and played softball at Villanova University.
