CARLSBAD, Calif. — The Carlsbad high boys basketball team did something the program has never done before, win the San Diego Section Open. They defeated the Montgomery Aztecs 56-47. But, this victory was sweeter than most for the Lancers, because it was revenge.
Last season, Carlsbad faced off against the Aztecs and was eliminated by them in the Open Division semifinal round. This year, they were not going to let it happen again.
“It felt great,” said guard Tristan Guzman. They knocked us out last year on my birthday, so whenever two top teams get to go at it, you know it's going to be fun.”
As great as getting revenge was for the Lancers, their eyes were on checking off another goal this team had for themselves.
Head Coach Clark Allard reflected on what the team wanted to accomplish before the season.
“We had a few main goals that we wanted to accomplish, but we also wrote out how we were going to accomplish them and what it was going to take," Coach Allard said. "Winning the San Diego Section was one of our goals, I’m proud of this talented group of guys.”
Now, Carlsbad will face off against St. Pius X St. Matthias to kick off the State Open Division Playoffs, on Wednesday, at Lancer Arena with a shot to advance in the state playoffs.
