SAN DIEGO — It's not the San Diego State Aztecs football season we were all hoping for. There will be no conference championship, no bowl game, and unfortunately, the season will end with a losing record.
"It's not the results anyone's hoping for," Head Coach Sean Lewis said. "I need to do a better job of leading these guys so that we can really perform to the level that I truly believe that we are capable of."
Coach Lewis said the lack of accomplishment doesn't mean the remainder of the season is meaningless.
"Lots of pride to play for as we continue to go forward here, right, continue to grow and continue to get better as we move forward with it."
Lewis said the team will play to win the final two games, as opposed to giving younger players playing time to build for the future:
"I think it's still the right thing to do, to be able to pour into this current season, right? And to be, you know, at best now five and seven, right? And who are the best guys that get their best chance to do that and not start looking ahead, you know, to the future? It's never been about that. We're going to be in the present and we're going to grow each and every single day the right way."
For Lewis, the injuries, the setbacks, the losses, are all just opportunities to grow as human beings.
"If you have an easy life, you're never going to be tested, right? And if you're never tested, how the heck are you ever going to know what you're truly capable of? There are great young men in that locker room that make up our football program. They're led by great men and women you know in the leadership roles that are in this building. And because of that, I know that we're going to have tremendous success as we continue to move forward."
Moving forward, the Aztecs play next at Utah State on Saturday, Nov 23 with a 12:30 p.m. kickoff.
