Chargers to retire LaDainian Tomlinson’s Number 21 Sunday

The Chargers are hoping to end a losing streak Sunday, while fans are hoping for a win against the Chiefs. The Bolts will also retire legendary running back LaDainian Tomlinson’s Number 21.

Watch the Chargers take on the Chiefs Sunday, November 22 on CBS 8 starting at 1PM.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The Chargers take the field against the Chiefs Sunday and the Bolts will also retire legendary running back LaDainian Tomlinson’s Number 21.

LT was a five time Pro Bowler - a league MVP - and shattered the NFL's record for most rushing touchdowns in a season.

The Chargers drafted LaDainian Tomlinson with their first pick in the 2001 draft and he quickly won over fans. In his nine seasons with the team, he rushed for more than 12,000 yards and scored 153 touchdowns. LT said one of his most memorable scores came against the Raiders in 2002.

There's no question that Number 21 was number one in the hearts of Chargers fans. He lead the team to its most wins ever in a season - 14 in 2006 - and he was also a great example off the field.

Tomlinson will be the fourth player to have his number (21) retired by the team, joining former Chargers players Lance Alworth (19), Dan Fouts (14) and the late Junior Seau (55).

LT was eventually released by the Chargers after the 2009 season and played two years for the Jets before officially retiring as a Charger.

Tomlinson said physically he still felt great, but he needed a break from the daily and weekly mental grind it takes to get ready for every game during the season.

"It wasn't because I didn't want to play anymore, that wasn't the reason, it was simply time to move on. I have no regrets at all. I don't anticipate ever coming back," he stated at his retirement announcement.

The Sunday home game was re-scheduled by the NFL and will start at 1:05pm.
